RESSASSER, 2020

card game

It is as a card game played with sentences which appeared in Marcel Duchamp’s black and white silent movie, Anemic cinemA. The name of this game is Ressasser: a representative palindrome in French referring to reviewing. While playing this game players can review the movie in several languages and different aspects. In the movie there are sentences playing on words in French. They are translated into the top five languages in the world by Google Translate: English, Chinese, Spanish, Hindi, and Arabic.

In order to play this game six people using six different languages are needed. People who use more than one language can choose one of their languages to participate. Players hold word cards and match them to incomplete sentences. When it is a correct match a player gets one point. As the game is formed with French sentences playing on words, the player who uses French obviously wins, and the following winner is an English or a Spanish-speaker. However, in order to play the game players using six different languages are necessary. This shows the worthlessness of the monopoly of language today, and the impossibility of translating the language playing on words. It eventually questions the monopoly of culture and art through language and the limitations of automatic translation.
